History of Interior Design
Every concept of design today made an entry in the history of interior design timeline and had an inventor or inventors. It is believed that interior design began its roots in Ancient Egypt and England but has been influenced by various cultures across the world to be where it is today. Here we look at the interior design history timeline and the various design styles, which are as old as world history itself.
History of interior design and furniture
The onset of interior design goes back to the 16th century during the Queen Elizabeth rule in England. The interior design hub of Africa was Egypt where animal skins and hides were used on humble furniture.Back then, the main element of the interior design was furniture. Furniture was first made from Oak and it is was upholstered. Later in the 17th century, veneering on wood and leather furniture would be introduced. The American interior design history was also made with country rustic furniture between 1684 and 1694.
While the first pieces of furniture offered utility in the 18th century, comfort was a priority in 19th-century pieces. Other types of wood such as Walnut, Mahogany and Beech were also introduced in creating various furniture designs. Additionally, famous furniture makers became established.
Carpets and Drapery
The first curtains were made from heavy velvet fabric and they made their entrance in the late 16th century. Carpets, on the other hand, were introduced in the 17th century. Lighter and synthetic fabrics would be introduced in the 18th and 19th century.
Color and Light
Before World War II, the main colors used in interior design were dark. After the war, bright colors emerged and so did luxurious designs for all consumers across status. Initially, British interior design history indicates it was for the affluent in society as seen in the royal palaces, chapels and villas. The light was first used for decoration in the 19th century.The paint was used for decoration at the end of the 19th century.
Interior design history 20th -21st century
This period has seen most homes adopting various design styles from historical past to merge with modernist kinds. Wallpaper designs came up in the early 20th century and gold was discovered to be a symbol of wealth from the tombs excavations in Egypt. Arts and craftsmanship, imagination and innovation are key in coming up with the modern interior design ideas because the manufacture of various home appliances poses challenges on the same.The use of natural, recyclable, non-toxic and cheap materials is also highly encouraged.
Modern interior design has also seen a departure from the cluttered decorations and designs to clean interior design styles.
History of interior design in Kenya
Interior design in Kenya emerged in the 21st century. However, interior designers who are famous in the country have taught themselves the skills of interior design on the job. Most did not go to college or university to specialize in an interior design course. Furthermore, there is no recognized body of Interior designers in Kenya, as yet.
